Opal Cutting

Lisa demonstrating the opal cutting process.

The rough opal mined at Lightning Ridge is processed at our Gold Coast complex to make the many different products that are on display in our showroom. The first step is the cutting of the opal in our cutting room. Here Lisa, one of our most experienced cutters, demonstrates how rough opal is cut and polished to produce beautiful gems.

A Japanese student group visit.

The cutting room also doubles as an education centre for tourists from around the world. The Australian Institute of International Understanding has accredited Opal Shed Mining Co as an educational destination for overseas students. Here they can gain first hand knowledge of opal and opal mining from the miner’s perspective.

For over six years now we have taken great pride in educating students from around the globe, with up to 50 student groups annually. Should you wish to organise a special student tour please don't hesitate to Contact Us to discuss your special needs. This offer is entirely free of charge.

We take great joy in educating tourists and students alike. We feel providing the correct background information enables you to make a confident and well-informed decision when it becomes time to make a purchase.
